Pretty Smart Patch

This free "Pretty Smart:  Beauty & STEM Go Together" self guided workshop and fun patch program is a Girl Scout Gold Award project. Did you know that girls as young as third grade start feeling the pressure that they must choose between being pretty or smart in order to be liked by boys and accepted amongst their peers? Stereotypes about girls’ interest in computer science and engineering are formed as early as age 6 and are evident from childhood through adolescence. Girls often feel disconnected from STEM or that it is irrelevant to their lives. The workshop aims to improve access to STEM through low cost, easy to do activities that help show the link between STEM and topics relevent to girls, such as cosmetics, jewelry, fashion, and food. Let’s help break stereotypes and stigmas that send the message that beauty equals popular and dumb, while intelligence equals ugly and a social misfit. The hope is that girls develop or feel more confident in their interest in STEM and realize that they can be Pretty and Smart!
